Le bichon poudré (The
powdered bichon) Engraving, 19 x 11.9 cm, by Jean-Baptiste Bouchet, before 1700 Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris |
||||||||||
| This illustration is considered to be a caricature of Louis XIV as a Bichon, a poodle-like dog, emphasising his vanity and absurdity through the exaggerated size of the powdered wig covering the upper part of his body. Alternatively, it is referred to as 'Le Bichon poudré: caricature d'un petit marquis' because the figure is said to represent those who do everything to pander to the king, dressing in a silly manner and behaving like little puppies before the powerful. |
