Le bichon poudré (The powdered bichon)
Engraving, 19 x 11.9 cm, by Jean-Baptiste Bouchet, before 1700
Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris

This illustration is considered to be a caricature of Louis XIV as a Bichon, a poodle-like dog, emphasising his vanity and absurdity through the exaggerated size of the powdered wig covering the upper part of his body. Alternatively, it is referred to as 'Le Bichon poudré: caricature d'un petit marquis' because the figure is said to represent those who do everything to pander to the king, dressing in a silly manner and behaving like little puppies before the powerful.

'A man in a wig, brown or blonde,
Thinks he charms the whole world.
But with these vain locks, lavishly adorned,
The snuff box at his nose, and powdered up to his eyes,
So thick is the mask and disguise
That one no longer knows his nature.
In his white mane, puffed up like a muff,
He seems to be nothing more than a Bichon.'
