Rota of the Twelve Winds Pen, ink and coloured washes on vellum, from Harley MS 3667, f. 5v, between 1122 and 1135 The British Library |

A scientific textbook, folio
5v of this manuscript, depicts a mediaeval twelve-wind diagram, with
each wind labelled and arranged around a circular scheme (a wind
rose), personified as blowing faces and reflecting classical systems
of directional winds derived from Aristotelian traditions.
Harley MS 3667
is a 12th-century
calendrical collection produced at Peterborough Abbey, whose
contents are derived in part from earlier work associated with
Byrhtferth of Ramsey (late 10th–early 11th century). |
