Monument to Álvaro Obregón: Front Entrance Granite (sculpture), by Ignacio Asúnsolo, 1935 Parque de la Bombilla, San Ángel, Mexico City |
||||||||||
| The two colossal figures at the entrance to the monument are officially titled 'El Trabajo' (Labour) and 'La Fecundidad' (Fertility) and were part of the original winning design submitted by Asúnsolo in June 1934. Fertility holds an ear of maize (mazorca), symbolising fertility and agricultural abundance. Labour is identifiable by a sledgehammer (mazo), symbolising work. Contemporary critics praised Asúnsolo's sculpture but criticised its integration with the architecture, noting that the figures are disproportionately large in relation to the entrance they flank. |
