The infant St John the
Baptist
Engraving print, by Antoine Louis Romanet, possibly after
Annibale Carracci, published after 1786
The British Museum, London
The infant Saint John the Baptist sleeps naked on a bed of vegetation,
his head resting on one arm while the other holds a cross-shaped staff,
a traditional attribute associated with him. A small stream flows in
the foreground, reinforcing his connection to baptism. In the background,
trees frame a distant kneeling figure—possibly an adult Saint
John the Baptist—near an architectural structure. Below the main
composition are the arms of the Dauphin of France.
