One of the Sirens, sea demons who were half woman and half bird.[H45]
One tradition tells that they lived in the Mediterranean, alluring sailors to eat them.[H45]
When they failed to attract Orpheus, they threw themselves into the sea and changed into rocks.[15B]
Parthenope's tomb was said to have been in Naples where her body was washed ashore.[H45]
