Priestess of Aphrodite at Sestos who was in love with Leander who lived in Abydos on the other side of the channel. He would swim over every night to her guided by a lantern that she would hang out for him. One night, the lantern blew out as he was swimming to her, and he got lost and drowned. Out of grief, Hero threw herself into the sea.[W78]
