Procris (1)

Biographical

A nymph of Diana, Procris was married to Cephalus but betrayed him with Pteleon, who won her affection with a golden crown. When Cephalus discovered her infidelity, she fled to King Minos, who fell in love with her and tried to seduce her. However, Minos was cursed by his wife, Pasiphae: any affair would cause serpents and scorpions to emerge from his body, killing his partner. To break the curse, Procris gave him a herb from Circe and, in return, requested two gifts: a hound that never lost its prey and a javelin that always hit its target. These items later passed to Amphitryon, who used the dog to hunt the Teumessian fox. After reconciling with Cephalus, Procris grew suspicious when she noticed him frequently leaving for hunting trips, and a servant revealed that Cephalus called out for 'Nephele' or 'Aura' after hunting, names she assumed were those of secret lovers. Driven by jealousy, she followed him one day into the woods, and when Cephalus heard a rustle in the underbrush, he threw his spear, mortally wounding Procris. As she lay dying, she realised too late that her jealousy had been unfounded.

A daughter of Erechtheus by Praxithea or by Herse, or a daughter of Cecrops, she married Cephalus. They had issue, according to some sources.
