Jibril
Other names: Gabriel
Biographical
Jibril is an archangel in Islam, revered as the angel of revelation, and
entrusted with delivering divine messages to prophets and messengers throughout
history. In the Quran, Jibril is mentioned by name only twice. In Surah
2:97: 'Say, 'Whoever is an enemy to Jibril, then indeed, he has already
led astray those who believe, for he has revealed to them the clear light
and the guides.', and in Surah 66:4: 'And it was Jibril who brought down
the Quran from your Lord in truth.' Jibril is also alluded to in other
Quranic verses, often referred to as 'the spirit' or 'the one of great
strength.' His role as the angel of revelation is further emphasised in
Islamic tradition, where he is credited with delivering the divine messages
to prophets such as Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and most importantly,
the Prophet Muhammad. In the life of the Prophet Muhammad, Jibril holds
a central position. He appeared to Muhammad during the Night of Power,
marking the beginning of the revelation of the Quran. Jibril continued
to visit Muhammad throughout his prophethood, delivering divine messages
and instructions. The Prophet Muhammad described Jibril as a tall, handsome
angel with a gentle voice and a powerful presence. Jibril's role extends
beyond divine revelation. He is also associated with various responsibilities
include guiding prophets and messengers, protecting and assisting the
righteous, and maintaining order in the universe. His equivalent in Christianiy
is Gabriel, and in Judaism, Gavri'el or Gavreel.
