Israfil
Other names: Sarafil,
Sarafin
Biographical
Israfil is the Islamic holy angel destined to announce the Day of Resurrection
by blowing a trumpet from the holy rock in Jerusalem. His counterpart
in Christianity and Judaism is Raphael, although other scholars have linked
him to Uriel, or Seraphiel. He is said to have tutored Muhammad for three
years in the duties of a prophet
and was his companion until being replaced with God's messenger
Djibril (Gabriel).
Israfil is not mentioned in the Quran itself, but in the Hadith
and in tafsir literature. He is depicted as having four wings: one covering
the earth; another covering his body against God; one in the east and
one in the west. He is also covered with hair and has multiple mouths,
and multiple tongues to praise God.
Israfil cries three times a day and three times each night when
he looks into hell. It is said the earth is watered by his tears.
