Pope Joan
Watercolour on parchment, from Des cleres et nobles femmes (Royal MS 20 C V), Anonymous, c. 1410
The British Library
, London

According to mediaeval legend, Pope Joan was a woman who disguised herself as a man and, under this guise, rose to the papacy, only to have her true identity revealed later. Des cleres et nobles femmes based on Boccaccio's De mulieribus claris, celebrates renowned women and highlights their virtues, wisdom, and strength. The work challenges the typical mediaeval view of women, portraying them as intellectual and moral equals to men.
