Magnard
(1837–94) Biographical A French journalist, Magnard joined the staff of Gaulois in 1859, followed by Grand Journal, Causerie, and other publications before becoming part of Figaro in 1863. His series of critical articles on contemporary literature, Paris au jour le jour, was published in both Événement and Figaro. He became editor-in-chief of Figaro in 1876, elevating it to a high standard of excellence, though it declined after his death. Magnard also wrote the anticlerical romance L’Abbé Jérôme in 1869 and Vie et aventures d’un positiviste in 1876.
