Son of a cobbler, he changed his name and claimed to be the illegitimate son of a nobleman. His real name is unknown.^[J92]
Moved to Rome, 1517, but was later forced to leave for Venice in 1527 because of his publications.^[J92] 
Became rich and successful through presents received from kings and nobles who feared his literary attacks, but also coveted his fame.^[J92]
