III
Byzantine Emperor (–>754?) Biographical Byzantine Emperor 715–17 abd A tax-gatherer at Atramytion, little is known of the reign of Theodosius III. He was proclaimed emperor by the troops in Opsikion, who had risen against Anastasius II. Although initially hesitant, he joined the rebels and made his way into Constantinople by late autumn. In 716, he negotiated a treaty with the Bulgar khan Tervel, likely in preparation for an Arab assault on the city. When Maslama invaded Byzantine territory, the generals Artabasdos and Leo III deposed Theodosius. He abdicated, and both he and his son withdrew to monastic life.
