Patricius 603–10

Curopalates 603–10

Magister utriusque militiae per orientem 604

Biographical

Domentziolus was appointed patricius and curapalates by his uncle Phocas. He was then dispatched east to carry on the war against the Persians, assuming control of both military forces and civil administration. While travelling through Galatia, he stopped at Heliopolis, where he was informed of an attack on Cappadocia by the Lazics and a conspiracy linked to Sergius. Instead of rushing forward, he chose to remain in place until the threat receded, using the time to visit Theodore of Syceon. Once the immediate danger passed, he resumed his journey east but soon fell into a Persian ambush. Fortunately, he managed to escape. Throughout his travels, Domentziolus made a point of frequently visiting Theodore and donating generously to religious communities. On one occasion, he punished Megethius, the tax collector, for his failure to provide horses, by flogging him. In 605, Domentziolus persuaded Narses to surrender, offering assurances of safety, but Phocas had Narses executed anyway. Towards the end of Phocas' reign, Domentziolus, still holding the role of curopalates, and with Thomas succeeding Cyriacus as patriarch in 607, commissioned a golden crucifix from a jeweller in Constantinople, with relics from Thomas added to it. After Phocas was overthrown in 610, Domentziolus was arrested and sentenced to death by Heraclius but was later pardoned due to Theodore of Syceon's intervention.

Son of Domentiza and an unnamed father, he married Irene and had three sons.
