| Mr Lockwood
Biographical
A shy, but rather pompous visitor from the city, Mr Lockwood becomes a
tenant to Heathcliff
at Thrushcross Grange. He seeks to withdraw from society, and desires
the solitude of the northern moors after having an affair at a seaside
resort in the south of England. He is interested in knowing more about
his landlord, whom he finds very reserved, and his beautiful widowed daughter-in-law.
He stays at the Heights during a snowstorm, has a nightmare, and then
convalesces there due to an illness. This gives Nelly
Dean the opportunity to recount to him the saga of the
two families over several weeks between 1801 and 1802. He and Nelly even
consider the possibility of him marrying Catherine
Linton. Constantly eager to learn more about the family
history, he promptly severs all contact with the Heights and its occupants
once his curiosity is satisfied. Nine months later, he is travelling north
during the shooting season, and he pays Nelly a visit where he learns
about Heathcliff's death and the forthcoming marriage between Catherine
and Hareton.
Lockwood is the primary, first-person narrator of the story.
