A conquistador of Mexico and Guatemala, Barahona was took part in the 1517 expedition to conquer Yucatan as a captain, under Francisco Hernández de Córdova, where he was wounded. He later participated in the campaigns against the Mexica capital, Tenochtitlán, under Cortés. With Pedro de Alvarado, he went to Guatemala, and took parts in the efforts of the conquest there.  After the conquests, Barahona was appointed to a number of posts, and became one of the richest and powerful residents in the country. He held the encomienda of Santiago Atitlán, from1525 to 1526, and from 1534 to 1549.

Son of Pedro Varona and Constancia de Toro, he married Isabel de Escobar, and had issue (including Sancho; Juan; Leonor, married to Juan de Cavallón).
