Alcalde Mayor of Jerez de la Frontera 1465 Alférez of Jerez de la Frontera 1465 Alcaide of Tempul Alcaide of Jimena Alcaide of Cádiz Vera was appointed by the Catholic Monarchs in 1480 to undertake the conquest of Gran Canaria, La Palma and Tenerife after earlier attempts had failed. He arrived that summer and began the campaign, taking part in the fighting against the indigenous population and killing the leader Doramas in single combat. He also built the tower of Agaete and captured the regent of Gáldar, who was baptised Don Fernando Guanarteme and later became an important ally. With the assistance of troops brought from the mainland and men from the Brotherhood of Andalusia, Vera continued the fighting and completely subdued Gran Canaria in the spring of 1483. Despite a royal order prohibiting him from interfering in the affairs of the islands, he went to La Gomera in 1484 at the request of Doña Inés Peraza to assist her son, Hernán Peraza, against a rebellion by his subjects. In 1488, he returned to La Gomera at the request of Doña Beatriz de Bobadilla, widow of Hernán Peraza, and, acting with her, enslaved and deported many of the island's inhabitants. This led to proceedings against him in 1490, when he was required to deposit one million maravedís to answer claims from the purchasers, and he subsequently lost the governorship of Gran Canaria. He later took part in the conquest of Granada. Vera was a brave and skilled politician, loyal to those he served, but also shaped by the violence and disregard for others of the wars against the Moors and by his own adventurous nature.
