The Facchinetti family
originated from Cravegna, in the land of the Antigorio Valley, in
the upper Ossola Valley, province of Novara. The first of this
lineage was Navarino, surnamed della Noce or dei Nocetti, from whom
came Pietro, Giacomo, and Antonio. The latter left his native land
and moved to Bologna, where he worked as a porter, for which he was
called Facchinetto. The family rose from such humble beginnings to a
position of considerable influence in both ecclesiastical and civic
spheres, producing a pope as well as several cardinals, senators,
and ambassadors. Their history reflects a steady accumulation of
authority, as they moved from the margins of society into roles that
carried both prestige and power. This involvement in religious and
political affairs spanned generations, firmly establishing their
place in the public life of Bologna and within the wider structures
of the Church.
