Educated at Marlborough College, Woolner was commissioned into the Royal Engineers and served in the First World War from 1914, seeing action in France and Belgium, where he was wounded, and remained in service until 1919. He later served in the Second World War with distinction. He retired in 1947.


Place of death: Ashford, Kent


Son of Hugh Woolner and Mary Simpson, he married Anne Pitt in 1923, and had issue:
