Gonzalo Alfonso Cervatos
(–1332)

Biographical

Knight of the Order of Calatrava

Gonzalo and his wife, Sancha, engaged in extensive economic activity and gradually acquired a considerable portfolio of both urban and rural properties. After initially living in the parish of San Vicente, they purchased a house in San Román in 1294, which they later expanded. Over the years, they bought estates, vineyards, salt flats, and other lands in and around Toledo, including properties in Tamuelas, Mascaraque, Ciruelos el Viejo, Azoverín, Almuradiel, Guadajaroz, Burujón, and the alquería of Olihuelas. Their urban holdings included additional houses, an oven, part of an inn in Zocodover, and rights to the Mesón del Trigo, which Gonzalo leased from the city authorities. As was typical for rich households at the time, Gonzalo and Sancha also owned slaves, some of whom were described as black or Moorish and are occasionally identified by name, along with their wives, who provided surety in case of escape. Gonzalo drew his will in 1328.
