Juan Bautista took part in the Spanish campaigns in Italy and spent much of his life in military service. In 1762, he continued his career with the Army of Castile. In 1773, he temporarily took charge of military and political affairs in Málaga, but the following year he was on leave in Madrid, where he remained until 1777. He later returned to active duty and remained in service until his death, although he was frequently absent because he was receiving treatment for an eye condition. Juan Bautista drew up his will on 21 February 1779 and named his relative, Joaquín Bernaldo de Quirós y Clarebout, his successor.
