Gabriel pursued a military career in the service of the Spanish Crown, taking part in numerous campaigns across Europe and North Africa. He participated in the Battle of Chiari, the Battle of Luzzara, the sieges of the castle of Luzzara and Guastalla, and the campaigns in Portugal, Gibraltar, Catalonia and Aragon. During the War of the Spanish Succession, he took part in the campaign of La Alcarria and the actions at Junquera, Guadalajara, Hiniesta, Elche, Orihuela and Montesa, where he relieved the besieged castle after crossing the enemy trenches and capturing the opposing commander and several soldiers. He was also involved in the siege of Tortosa, the Battle of Almansa in 1707, the campaigns of Catalonia and Aragon, and the battles of Villaviciosa and Almenara in 1710. Gabriel later participated in the expedition to Ceuta in 1720 and 1721 and in the conquest of Oran in 1732, where he took part in the fighting against the Moorish forces. He remained in royal service until the end of his military career, which he concluded in Estremadura.
