As envoy extraordinary, Álvaro accompanied Philip V to Italy
and worked to counter Austrian moves in the Republic. Despite these
efforts, the Anglo-Catalan agreement was signed on 20 June 1705. After
agreeing to exchange posts with Monteleón in Mantua, he held
his farewell audience in Genoa in December of that year, but the conflict
prevented the transfer from taking place, forcing him to seek refuge
in Naples, where he obtained permission to return to Spain in 1707.
