A
number of traditions exist to explain the origins of the Bernaldo (or
Bernaldo) de Quirós family, including claims of descent from
the Emperors of Constantinople,
the ancient Dukes of Cantabria
and the Spanish hero Bernaldo del Carpio. Modern genealogies have claimed
that the Quirós family sprang from the de Caso family, relying
on a mixture of traditions, documents and privileges that are not relevant
to them as evidence. However, it is argued that the family's first verifiable
ancestor was Count Bernaldo Jiménez.
The family motto 'After God, the House of Quirós', was to have
emerged in the 15th century when the family's wealth was only surpassed
by the House of God, that being the Bishop of Oviedo.
