Gutierre had his claim to his father's encomiendas, held in trust, confirmed by the Bishop of Oviedo in 1314 and was granted control of the lands of Teverga and Quirós, Riosa, the granaries of Agüera, San Pelayo, Varcena, Palacio, and the préstamo of Serandi de la Sierra, amongst others. He experienced conflict with the residents of Quirós over the collection of certain taxes and the right to claim the estates of deceased vassals. He was the godson of Count Don Rodrigo Álvarez of Asturias and a steward in his household, as confirmed by a deed dated 1325. The same deed granted him the town and lordship of Villoria that he received as dowry from his marriage to María de Cifuentes. Enrique de Trastámara, later Enrique II of Castile, confirmed his rights over Villoria in a deed dated 1351. Other sources state that his wife's name was 'Doña Marquesa'.
