Gutierre spent much of his life in royal administration, undertaking a series of responsibilities that reflected the trust placed in him by the Crown. Throughout his career, he was considered for a number of increasingly important roles and received repeated expressions of royal favour, demonstrating the high regard in which he was held. After leaving the royal court in 1684 and settling in Asturias, he devoted particular attention to maintaining and improving his family residences in Avilés, Oviedo, Mieres, and Villoria, and undertook an extensive programme of building works, particularly in Avilés, where he spent the remainder of his life. There, he remodelled the façade of the family palace and its southern wing. He also financed the new site of the Convent of La Merced for the Mercedarian friars after their relocation from Raíces. Gutierre was also patron of the Convent of La Merced in Avilés, the main chapel of the Convent of San Francisco in Oviedo, the Convent of the Conception in Vivero, and the endowments and foundations established by Apolinario de Huergo. He also held several chaplaincies and benefices, both with and without cure of souls. He inherited the mayorazgos of the main family line as its principal heir and also inherited the mayorazgos of his mother’s family. His will was dated 17 June 1699.
