Gregorio began his military career as a cadet in the regiment of the Royal Spanish Guards and later served in Oviedo after the reorganisation of the regiment's battalions. In 1798, he was involved in an altercation in Madrid with Joaquín Manuel de Villena, the Queen's chief equerry, and in 1806 received royal permission to marry. Following the outbreak of the Peninsular War, he joined the Asturian forces attached to Joaquín Blake's Army of the Left and was killed at the Battle of Espinosa de los Monteros while leading his troops.
