Biographical Governor of Asturias 1230 Gonzalo was present at the conquest of Baeza, which was surrendered to King Fernando III of Castile on the feast of Saint Andrew in 1227. He took part in the campaigns at Úbeda, Córdoba, Jaén, and Seville. After Alfonso IX of León died, Ferdinand III sent Gonzalo to take control of the Principality of Asturias as governor. He was handed the keys of Oviedo when he formally took possession, an occasion said to be marked on the family coat of arms by the inclusion of keys. The eight Crosses of Saint Andrew also appear on the border of the coat of arms in remembrance of the day on which the Battle of Baeza was fought. The king also granted him the Asturian concejo of Quirós, from which he took his surname, in addition to entrusting him with the castle of Alba de Quirós.
