Carlos joined the army at the age of sixteen and spent the following decades serving with a succession of infantry units in various parts of Spain. He participated in the political and military conflicts of the reign of Isabella II and fought during the African War of 1859–1860, taking part in the campaign in Tetouan and the Battle of Wad Ras. During the final years of his career, he undertook a number of senior military and administrative duties before entering the reserve in 1881.
