Álvaro received a degree in canon law from the University of Oviedo in 1675. He then transferred his degree to the University of Alcalá and entered the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso in 1677. He moved to Madrid, where he practised law. In 1690, he left Cádiz with his children, his wife having already died, to assume his post as an oidor, and arrived in Santiago. He left for Lima, Peru, in 1710 to take up his position on the Royal Audiencia of Lima, reaching the capital in 1713 due to certain difficulties. He officially retired from public service in 1720 but was recalled to royal service in 1721. Álvaro was also a poet and writer. He inherited the mayorazgo of Lena and Aller from his brother Sebastián in 1734.
