Darvall first arrived in India on military duty in 1823. He took part in the First Burma War in 1824. In 1859, he was transferred to the 3rd European Infantry.

Son of Edward Darvall and Emily Johnson, he married Sophia Docker in 1841 (daughter of Rev John Docker), and had issue (including Alice Mary, 1845–1933, married to Rev. Herbert Thornton in 1890; Emily Sophie, 1842–1923, married to her cousin Robert Johnson, with issue).
