Margrethe Kauffman
(1856-86)[M23]
Biographical
Daughter of Salomon Kauffmann (1824-1900). Salomon's brothers were
Julius, Robert, Wilhelm and Adolf. Adolf was trained as a physician,
but his interest was music and he helped found the Breslau Orchestral
Society. The brothers were the sons of Meyer Kauffmann
(1791-1871), a textile seller from Schweidnitz who began establishing
textiles factories in Breslau from 1841. The first four brothers joined
their father in the textile business and they became successful
merchants and industrialists. Salomon greatly increased the success of
their business, and he became an important figure in Breslau. He was
chairman of the Breslau Orchestral Society, and helped Brahms receive an
honorary degree from the Breslau University.[M23] |
