Pedro's father purchased the captaincy of Porto Seguro under a licence dated 16 July 1559, with permission to appoint his son as captain. Pedro later accompanied King Sebastião on his expedition to North Africa in 1578.

Son of João de Lencastre and Juliana de Lara, he married FIlipa de Silva
