After her son Raimundo, 4th Duke of Aveiro, fell from favour, the
Duchess of Torres Novas was exiled from Portugal, and her daughter,
Maria Guadalupe, accompanied her to Castile. When Raimundo died and
peace was established between Spain and Portugal, Maria Guadalupe
sought to reclaim the Aveiro estate and brought a lawsuit in Lisbon
against her uncle, Pedro, the 5th Duke. The case was eventually decided
in her favour in 1679, on the condition that she return to Portugal,
establish her permanent residence there and pay homage to the Portuguese
monarch before taking possession of the estate and its residence.
Unable to persuade her husband to agree to the move, she legally separated
from him so that she could return to Portugal.
