Álvaro claimed the dukedom of Aveiro in opposition to his cousin Juliana. The King ordered them to marry and declared them both successors to the dukedom.

Son of Alfonso de Lencastre and Violante Henriques, he was married in c. 1590 to Juliana de Lencastre, with issue
