While in southern France in 1790, Barton, along with other Englishmen living there, enrolled as a volunteer in the National Guard. He later received formal thanks from the National Convention for his conduct at Moissac during the disturbances at Montauban. After returning to England, he secured a commission in the 11th Light Dragoons and served with the regiment under the Duke of York in 1795, and again in Holland in 1799. During the latter campaign he was thanked by Sir Ralph Abercromby for his service on 8 September at Oude CarspeL. He was in command of the 2nd Life Guards at the time of the Burdett riots in 1810, when the Life Guards became widely unpopular. He later commanded the two squadrons of the regiment sent to the Peninsula, where he served for a period.

Robert Barton was married secondly to Marion Addison, †1875, in 1834, her second marriage, and had issue:
• Alexandrina Charlotte, 1836–1919, married firstly in 1863 to Sir Henry Durrant, with issue, and secondly in 1884 to Arthur Blundell
