Johann
Samuel
Koenig
(1815–63)
Biographical
An illegitimate child, his father's name is unknown, his birth being
registered under his mother's surname. He was trained as a gunsmith
by his family, travelling Europe as a journeyman, however, he never
became a master due to industrialisation, and perhaps because of his
illegitimacy. He resided in Zella, but due to lack of work and poverty,
he migrated to America in 1854 with his wife and children. He initially
worked as a tailor, and was then employed at the Colt Armory at Hartford,
along with his half-brother, Paul Schneider. He died of tuberculosis.
