Basinus
Bishop of Trier (–705) Biographical Bishop of Trier 698–705† Abbot of St Maximin, Trier Basinus, born into a distinguished family of Austrasia, entered the monastery of St Maximin as a monk and rose to become its abbot. Following the death of St Numerian, bishop of Trier, he was pressed into taking the mitre and guiding the see during the reign of Childebert II, king of Austrasia. Basinus was a patron of Saxon missionaries, including St Willibrord, who became his companion. He retired to his former abbey and died there. His body was placed beneath the high altar in the basilica of St Maximin, later being moved in 1621 to a position of greater prominence. He was followed in the episcopal office by his nephew, St Lutwin. St Basinus' feast day is 4 March. Place of death: Trier Place of burial: St Maximin Abbey He was said to be the brother of Gunza. |
