Self-Portrait Modelling a White Suit with Panama Hat
Pencil, gouache on paper, 44.5 x 30.2 cm, by
Egon Schiele, 1910
Leopold Museum, Vienna

Schiele’s interest in fashion remains uncertain, shaped by a loose and personal engagement with ideas around clothing, modern identity, and reform rather than any fixed position. His designs for the Viennese design collective Wiener Werkstätte and the garments he commissioned for himself suggest an ease with fashion as a means of presenting himself, including a readiness to adopt a consciously fashionable manner.
