Biographical
His true identity is uncertain but some theories include:
· he was a son of a butcher from Salzburg[S74]
· his real name was Joseph Joachim Reinhardt, born 1732 in Piel,
Tyrol[S74]
· his name at birth was Joannes Reiner, born at La Rochell, Luxembourg
in 1707 to Martin Buzerin Reiner and Catherine Rosport who were
immigrants from Tyrol[S74]
He joined the Dutch East India Company which sailed for the East in 1743.[P71]
Became a sergeant with the French forces at Chandarnagar but later deserted.[E78]
Commanded battalions of the Nawab Qasim where he massacred English captives
at Patna in 1763, and later desrted.[E78]
He was finally in the service of the Jat Raja of Bharatpur, but deserted
him in 1775 when the Jat Raja was defeated by the Emperor Shah Alam II.
The Emperor granted him an estate round Sardhana.[S74]
He was possibly murdered at Agra.[E78]
