Ira Aldridge

Biographical

An actor, Aldridge worked with the African Theatre in New York where he first played Rolla in Sheridan's Pizarro.  He sailed to England in around 1824, and made his London acting debut at the Royal Coburg Theatre in 1825 as Oronooko in The Revolt of Surinam, or, A Slave's Revenge.  In 1883, he made his West End debut at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, in Othello.  He toured the provinces and Ireland and then the continent for the first time in 1852-55 where he was received with much acclaim.  He died in Europe during one of his tours.
