Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
plays the keyboard, accompanied by his father Leopold Mozart, who
holds a violin, and his sister Maria Anna ('Nannerl'), seated beside
him. On the wall behind them hangs a portrait of their mother, Anna
Maria Mozart, who died in 1778. The family engages in music within
an elegant interior, an activity central to their lives,
particularly during Wolfgang's youth. Sculptures set into the walls
draw on classical models, aligning the domestic sphere with ideals
of harmony, order, and cultivated taste characteristic of late
18th-century bourgeois and aristocratic interiors. This composition
is based on a painting by Johann Nepomuk della Croce from around
1780–1781.
