Caterina Cornaro
Oil on panel, 63.2 x 49.4 cm, by
Gentile Bellini, c. 1500
Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest

When Bellini painted Caterina, her youth had passed, but he showed her with calm clarity, giving equal weight to her face and the splendour of her dress. The layered ornaments and fabrics recall eastern designs he had seen in Istanbul, lending the portrait a sense of solemn richness. Her composed stillness, shaped by ceremony and expectation, turns the image into a quiet symbol of controlled power. The inscription in Latin reads:

I bear the name and lineage of Cornelia,
That maiden whom the Venetian calls his daughter and whom Cyprus serves as queen.
You see how great I am, but greater still is the hand of Gentile Bellini,
Who captured me so well on so small a panel.
