Biographical
James I. (1566-1625), King of Great Britain and Ireland; son of Mary Queen
of Scots and Darnley; b. Edinburgh; proclaimed James VI. of Scotland,
I567; under regents till I581; married Anne of Denmark; curbed power of
nobles in Scotland. James succeeded Elizabeth on Eng. throne, 1603. He
had an obstinate belief in divine right of kings, and in duty of passive
obedience on part of subjects; his reign was marked by constant struggle
with Parliament, which in the following reign led to the Great Rebellion.
'The wisest fool in Christendom'; was the author of several books; much
influenced by favourites.[H46]
