Biographical
Albrecht was appointed regent of Holland after his brother Wilhelm went
mad. He set about possessing the Dutch lands for Bavaria and eventually
succeeded when Charles IV of France recognised his claims. Internal affairs
in the Netherlands were very difficult, and Albrecht was drawn into the
struggle between the two parties of the Kabeljaus and Hoeks. His son Wilhelm
was appointed leader of the Kabeljaus, but Albrecht tended to support
the Hoeks. Albrecht was said to have been under the influence of his mistress
Adelheid van Poelgeest and in 1390 she was murdered by followers of the
Kabeljaus. Albrecht began to persecute the Hoeks and fearing his father's
vengeance, his son Wilhelm fled. Father and son were reconciled in 1394
after the disorder subsided. Albrecht was never considered a brilliant
ruler, and had been seen as indolent and small-minded. He founded a Carmelite
monastery in Straubing in 1367.
He also founded the Order of St Anthony.
