Portrait of a Lady Watercolour and body colour on ivory, 8.8 x 7.6 cm, by Michaelo Albanesi, 1837 Private collection |

| The sitter in this portrait is traditionally identified as Maria Anna of Sardinia, the wife of Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria. An idealised representation steeped in the aesthetic conventions of early nineteenth-century court imagery, it depicts the empress in a structured pale blue silk gown with lace trim and full sleeves, her hair arranged with white camellias. Pearls at her neck and ears signal status expressed with restraint. The composed expression and controlled posture reflect the Habsburg preference for images that conveyed stability, decorum, and dynastic authority. |
