| Grand Duchess
Olga of Russia (1895–1918) Biographical Olga Nikolaevna, the eldest daughter of the Tsar Nichols II, was expected to be a role model for her younger sisters. Despite her sensitive nature, Olga possessed a strong will and independent thinking. She shared a close bond with her sister Tatiana, often sharing rooms together and dressing alike. They were even nicknamed 'The Big Pair' within the family. Notably, Queen Victoria, Olga's great-grandmother, served as one of her godparents. Olga excelled in academics, demonstrating a love for learning and spending time with books. Throughout Olga's life, speculation swirled around her future marriage. Potential suitors included various European royals, such as Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich of Russia and Crown Prince Carol of Romania. Interestingly, even Edward, Prince of Wales, heir to the British throne, was rumoured to be a candidate. However, Olga reportedly prioritised marrying a fellow Russian and remaining in her home country. With the outbreak of World War I, Olga answered the call to serve. She worked as a nurse, tending to wounded soldiers in a military hospital. The physical demands of nursing proved strenuous, and Olga eventually transitioned to administrative duties to avoid overexertion. She was murdered, along with the rest of her family, at Yekaterinburg. Place of birth: St Petersburg Place of death: Yekaterinburg Place of burial: Peter and Paul Cathedral, St Petersburg Daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and Princess Alix of Hesse-Darmstadt. |
