| According to the inscription, Herman Rinck, an agent of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, commissioned the portrait on 29 October 1505. It was intended for Margaret of Austria as part of an unsuccessful attempt to arrange a marriage. After the death of his first wife, Elizabeth, in 1503, Henry sought to wed Maximilian's daughter, Margaret of Savoy. |
