Luisa was a figure defined by her fierce independence, defiance of societal norms, and unwavering commitment to justice. Her life was marked by her opposition to Franco’s regime, a struggle that saw her arrested in the 1960s for attending a protest against the Palomares nuclear disaster. Facing the threat of imprisonment, she chose voluntary exile in France, returning to Spain in 1975 as the country transitioned to democracy. Her return coincided with a period of personal and social transformation, during which she embraced her role as an outspoken aristocrat unafraid to challenge convention. Beyond the scandals that surrounded her personal life, Luisa was deeply committed to social causes. Her rebellious nature, which earned her the title of ‘La Duquesa Roja’, reflected her dedication to justice and her disdain for the rigid expectations of Spain’s aristocracy. Luisa married Liliane Dahlmann, now the Dowager Duchess of Medina Sidonia, on her deathbed under Spain’s new same-sex marriage law. They had met in 1983 at the wedding of her eldest son, Leoncio, the future Duke of Medina Sidonia, igniting a deep bond that lasted for decades despite significant family and societal opposition. Before her death, she granted Liliane full control of her foundation and assets. This was later contested by her children, leading to a long legal battle between them and Dahlmann. The dispute ended in victory for the children in 2018, with Dahlmann remaining co-owner of the foundation. Luisa's legacy remains a complex mix of activism, defiance, and refusal to conform, making her one of the most intriguing and unconventional figures in Spanish history.
