He switched his allegiance to the Trastámara branch and began to receive various important appointments. Pope Urban VI named him cardinal and made him papal legate, but Gutierre renounced this dignity and, along with King Juan I of Castile, pledged his allegiance to the antipope Clement VII in Avignon. Clement VII then made him cardinal-priest. He spent the rest of his life in Avignon. Place of death: Avignon Son of García Álvarez de Toledo and María Téllez de Meneses. |
